Eugene Lavery, MM
Eugene Lavery is currently Director of Music at The Cathedral Church of Saint John in Wilmington, Delaware, where he also serves as Artistic Director of the Cathedral Choir School. Overseeing a program originally established in 1883, Mr. Lavery conducts the Cathedral Choir of Men, Women, and Choristers and leads one of the most prominent Episcopal choir schools in the United States.
Born in New Zealand, Mr. Lavery received his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honors from the University of Auckland while also serving as Organ Scholar and then Assistant Organist at Holy Trinity Cathedral in Auckland. At the University of Auckland, he studied organ with Dr. John Wells and conducting with Dr. Karen Grylls. In 2007 Mr. Lavery relocated to the United States after gaining entry to the prestigious Master of Music program at The Juilliard School in New York. While at Juilliard, he studied organ with Professor Paul Jacobs and conducting with Professor Kent Tritle.
As a solo performer, Mr. Lavery won first prize in the New Zealand Association of Organists Performance Competition and has given organ recitals in many notable venues including Saint Patrick's Cathedral and Saint Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue in New York; Saint Andrew's Cathedral in Sydney, Australia; and Saint Paul's Cathedral in Wellington, New Zealand. In the fall of 2011, he looked forward to upcoming engagements at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, New Jersey; and Saint Paul's Cathedral, London, England.
