Summer Day Camp
Cathedral Choir School
Wilmington, Delaware
The Cathedral Choir School has taken "under its wings" the management of the Brandywine Village Summer Camp.
In 2011, this camp expanded its offerings to "bridge" the summer gap for 70-80 neighborhood children from low-income families by providing valuable music instruction and activities to maintain their reading and math skills, while they enjoy swimming and other summer fun.
Current Choir School students who also attend the after-school program from September through May will now get a needed summer boost to prepare for the next academic year. One of the biggest divides in education between rich and poor students is that wealthier students are exposed to environments of continued learning during after school hours and summer breaks while poorer students are not often afforded these opportunities. The Cathedral Choir School exists to provide an environment of continued learning that all students so acutely need.
Children in the Brandywine Village Summer Camp will be evaluated at the start of camp to establish their reading and math skills. Four days a week each child will have a rotation of reading, math and music instruction, as well as the usual fun camp experiences and field trips. Experienced teachers will be hired to oversee periods of practice and instruction aimed at building student skill levels.
At the end of the Camp, each camper will be re-evaluated in reading and math. The aim is to improve or, at the very least, maintain these skills in each child over the long school break. The use of skilled educators to coordinate the educational components of camp is expected to provide this outcome for each child.
During the school year, evaluations collected from our participating families have demonstrated that students in the program become more self-confident, are better able to express their feelings, have improved attitudes toward learning, do better academically and are more likely to graduate from high school and enroll in college.
